Monterey & Carmel Tour: Full Itinerary

Our Monterey Peninsula tours feature beautiful landscapes, intriguing history, and picturesque towns like no other on earth. Following a scenic two-hour drive, we arrive in Monterey (California's capital under Mexican rule) to visit its world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium, an expertly-crafted ringside seat for observing the undersea worlds just beyond our reach: the playful otters and luminescent jellyfish will enthrall you. (Or, you may prefer to stop en route for an hour at Filoli, a Georgian mansion set in one of the nation's premier formal gardens.)

We absorb the special ambience of Pacific Grove, its breathtaking shoreline and Victorian cottages. We arrive at the Seventeen-Mile-Drive, stopping several times to appreciate its famous Lone Cypress, the Lodge at Pebble Beach, and dramatic vistas along the way. Lunch is enjoyed at a charming restaurant in the celebrated and truly unique village of Carmel.

Afternoon features a visit to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo (completed 1797)—its gardens, baroque Nativity scene and museum—an evocative souvenir of life in Spanish California. We pause next door to take in the spectacular view from Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch. Or, you may wish to devote all your time to discovering the more than 80 art galleries and one-of-a-kind shops in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a "storybook hamlet in a forest." With so many compelling attractions nearby, you may wish to stay overnight—or at least for dinner—or simply to rest during our two-hour drive home.
