Berkeley & Oakland Sightseeing Tours
Get Acquainted with Two Dynamic, Surprising Cities
Begins with a stroll through the Bay-side Jack London Square shopping district… (perhaps you've arrived there by ferry); continues via Oakland's thriving Chinatown to the superb Oakland Museum with its unique displays of California's history through its artifacts—dioramas of every decade; followed by brief stops at "Old Oakland" and City Centre, the city's Victorian and contemporary commercial cores, and Preservation Park, an enchanting re-creation (using actual historic houses) of our 19th-century past—on our way to Lunch at the sui generis Cajun-Creole restaurant, the Gingerbread House.
Afternoon begins with a drive around Lake Merritt, with a stop at the nation's oldest wildlife sanctuary (migrating birds); continues up to the view from the Mormon Temple, and a drive through the former firestorm area where new dream homes command precipitous overlooks of the Bay. Moving past the Claremont Spa we arrive at the world-famous campus of the University of California at Berkeley (where the Free Speech movement began and often continues)…closing the day with a stroll into the Berkeley Rose Garden (and in summer, a shopping stop at the upscale Fourth Street corridor). You may also end the day by dining at one of the area's many outstanding restaurants (e.g. Chez Panisse, birthplace of "California cuisine") and,or a romantic cruise in an authentic Venetian gondola under Oakland's Necklace of Lights.
With adequate notice, a special docent-led, two-hour tour of the Paramount Theater in downtown Oakland (one of the nation's Art Deco masterpieces) can be arranged. Special reservations may also be made for the excellent and profoundly informative Black Panther Party Legacy Tour [3+ hours]. Whatever your final itinerary, these two communities will surprise! and charm you.
What will it Cost?
Because each tour is designed to fit your interests, our fees vary. Basically you pay by the number of hours in your itinerary. We do not add the fuel surcharges, "license fees," "tax" and mandatory gratuities that many other companies do.
